The debut feature from Erica Tremblay, Fancy Dance is a heartfelt tale of sisterhood and survival starring Lily Gladstone. Since her sister’s disappearance, Jax (Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki’s grandfather, the pair hit the road to try and track down Roki’s mother in time for an upcoming powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonised world while at the mercy of a failed justice system.

As well as these antiquities, Arthur is also searching for his lost love Beniamina, with the film soon becoming a dreamy meditation on the way the past seeps into the present.

The latest documentary from BIFA award winning director Paul Sng (Poly Styrene: I am a Cliche), Tish tells the story of Tish Murtha, a visionary photographer who dedicated her life to documenting the struggle and inequality of the working-class communities that framed her upbringing.

Operating in the 1970s and 1980s as she documented the communities in the Northeast of England and London’s Soho, she died aged 56 with her work relatively unknown. In this loving tribute to her life and work narrated by Maxine Peak, Tish’s daughter Ella revisits key images and moments from her mother’s life.

However, when pub landlord TJ (Dave Turner) strikes up an unlikely friendship with young Syrian Yara (Ebla Mari), the two work together to try and find a way for all the residents to get along.

After Travis (Jones) is released from a stint in prison, he realises that everything has changed whilst he’s been away, and finds himself thrown into a sea of family issues. When Travis buys girlfriend Candice (Burke) her dream dress for a musical theatre audition, rather than alleviating the family’s problems, it ends up complicating the situation further as secrets and unspoken desires threaten to spill out and Travis is forced to re-examine his identity and place in the world.

The debut feature film from Tina Satter, Reality is a tense political thriller that depicts the real-life interrogation of Reality Winner, a former veteran, NSA translator and the first whistleblower of the Trump era.

On 3rd June 2017, 25-year-old Reality Winner heads back to her house in Atlanta after running errands to find two FBI agents waiting on her doorstep; what follows is a cryptic interrogation and a shattering of Reality's life as she knows it. Using dialogue taken from the original transcript of Winner's conversation with the FBI interspliced with images from her social media, Satter's film is a masterful blend of documentary and drama that highlights the woman at its centre.

In Peter Strickland’s latest mind-bender, we pay a visit to The Sonic Catering Institute - a creative retreat for artists whose work occupies a place somewhere between avant-garde music and outré cuisine.

The Institute welcomes a three-piece act comprising of Strickland regular Fatma Mohamed, Ariane Labed and Sex Education’s Asa Butterfield, rocking a 00s emo haircut that we’re definitely not mad about. But as relations between bandmembers are deteriorate, their host’s (Gwendoline Christie) psyche is unravelling and the in-house doctor’s obsession with classical texts is driving everyone to distraction.

Kya becomes friendly with two different men in her town after years of being a social reject and the subject of an urban myth. After one of the men is found dead, Kya becomes the main suspect and is pulled into a murky world of secrets.

As the atmosphere starts to get tense, Pete’s pushed to breaking point as he questions those around him.

Directed by Andrew Gaynord from a razor sharp script by Tom Stourton and Tom Palmer, with a cast of rising British talent, All My Friends Hate Me is a deliciously dark comedy about social paranoia.

The Riddler (Paul Dano), The Penguin (Colin Farrell) and Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) are all back on screen in this murky and rain-slicked adaptation.

After two postponements, Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007 finally gets its day.

Placed in the hands of True Detective and Beasts of No Nation director Cary Joji Fukunaga, Bond is joined by the usual supporting cast of Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Léa Seydoux, as well as new 00 Lashana Lynch and Rami Malek as Craig’s final boss.

No Time To Die is out in cinemas September 30th.


A BRIXTON TALE

A voyeuristic, wealthy vlogger finds herself drawn to a handsome, shy youth from Brixton’s infamous Barrier Block housing project. Their relationship with each other, and with the camera, leads them down a dangerous path.

CANDYMAN

#FILMOFTHEWEEK 23 - 29 August

When artist Anthony and partner Brianna move into a luxury loft condo in Chicago’s newly-gentrified Cabrini-Green neighbourhood, a chance encounter with a resident old-timer exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman, a supposedly supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror.

As Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, he unknowingly opens a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence.

Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s contemporary take on the 1992 cult-classic, Candyman is in cinemas on August 27th.

In the Thatcherite Britain of 1985, film censor Enid (Niamh Algar) discovers an eerie horror that speaks directly to her sister’s mysterious disappearance. As she resolves to unravel the puzzle behind the film and its enigmatic director, she unknowingly embarks on a quest that will blur the lines between fiction and reality.

On the back of our run of special previews, Prano Bailey-Bond’s terrifying debut Censor is released in cinemas on August 20th.


 

LIMBO

#FILMOFTHEWEEK 26 July - 2 August

Set on a fictional remote Scottish island, Ben Sharrock’s critically adored film follows a group of new arrivals as they await the results of their asylum claims. Among them is Omar (Amir El-Masry), a young Syrian musician struggling with the guilt, regret and grief that comes with leaving his former life behind.

This deadpan comedy-drama from a bold new voice in British cinema shines a light on the hearts and lives of those at the centre of a crisis that is mostly only experienced through the headlines. A must-watch, Limbo is out in cinemas on July 30th.


Summer of soul

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson's Summer of Soul is a powerful and transporting documentary uncovering never-before-seen and largely forgotten footage of The Harlem Cultural Festival in the summer of 1969.

Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.


BLACK WIDOW

#FILMOFTHEWEEK 5-11 July

The next chapter of the MCU has arrived. When a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, must deal with her history as a spy and confront the darker parts of her ledger to combat a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down.

It’s been more than two years since a Marvel film came out in the cinema and their return can only be a good thing. Black Widow is out in cinemas on July 9th.


LAST MAN STANDING

#FILMOFTHEWEEK 28 June - 4 July

With Suge Knight, the former CEO of legendary rap music label Death Row Records, recently sentenced to 28 years imprisonment for manslaughter in a long line of violent crimes not typically associated with a highly successful record executive.

Now, as people start to open up about Knight, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield presents new, never-before-heard evidence about the role Knight played in the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, and the involvement of corrupt LAPD officers and their attempts to conceal evidence.

In Washington Heights, the scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies a vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi, who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

The adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical is the big-screen summer smash we all need in 2021, with Anthony Ramos emerging as cinema’s newest leading man. Watch it in cinemas now.

SHIVA BABY
