THE WATCH LIST WITH EMMA APPLETON

“Any film that starts with more questions than answers is an immediate favourite already. ”

With her new film LOLA out now, we spoke to Everything I Know About Love star Emma Appleton all about the films that inspire her.

1. PARIS, TEXAS (1984)

“Any film that starts with more questions than answers is an immediate favourite already. The cinematography, the music. The part when they play the home video gets me EVERY TIME.”

2. LABRYINTH (1986)

“Watching this for the first time as a kid made me realise how magical film and the world could be. I fell in love with Bowie, and it’s still the film I watch to this day for comfort.”

3. A SINGLE MAN (2009)

“Colin Firth’s stunningly subtle and nuanced performance. The soundtrack. A beautiful portrayal of grief, love, and friendship.”

4. WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT (1993)

“Maybe the best biopic I’ve ever seen. Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne’s STAGGERING performances. Also, who doesn’t love Tina Turner?”

5. THE KING OF COMEDY (1982)

“I love a classic underdog story. I will never get over De Niro’s performance in this movie, so many subtle eccentricities played so easily. The chemistry he has with Sandra Bernhardt is bizarrely compelling too.”

Honourable mentions go to:

BILLY ELLIOT (2000)

IN BRUGES (2008)

THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE (1986)

CONTROL (2007)

EASY A (2010)
